Chapter 18

Downsides to Fame and Glory

Wang Leung continued his regular schedule of taking lessons from his patriarch, refining pills for the imperial army, performing his missions at the association, and visiting his two factions with the Corpse Daoist and beastmen. He noticed guards secretly following, but Wang Leung used simple tricks to ditch them. He flew over their heads, hid behind other shoppers, entered restaurants and escaped, or disguised himself as an adult.

"That brat!" Fu Chen complained because he knew the boy was toying with the head eunuch! However, Emperor Long had a different reaction. "Wang Leung knows how to protect himself. And if he gets into a sticky situation, the boy has plenty of trump cards to keep his little life," Du Liang snorted while patting a waist pouch, referencing Wang Leung's display of his corpse puppet collection.

The servant read another report, and his face turned severe. "Sire, the first prince hired the Black Guild to hunt Wang Leung," Fu Chen notified his liege.

"Oh, Du Fang, how you disappointed your father," the emperor sighed. One of his criteria for choosing a successor was testing their boundaries, and his firstborn son failed by seeking to commit fratricide. Many kingdoms and empires fell apart due to internal conflict, and Du Liang's goal was to avoid selecting a crown prince with such tendencies. "You're out of the running!" he declared with a harumph.

Fu Chen was shocked by this decision because the first prince had the most supporters from other noble factions, with five kings on his roster. Moreover, the conservative members believed in seniority, and the firstborn son had an unshakeable claim on the throne unless they conspired with an enemy country or became insane. Even if the son proves infertile, they could present a puppet to inherit in the future.

The sovereign raised his hand. "If that boy is willing to kill his brother, why wouldn't he plot against me as well?" Du Liang noted. Loyalty was the most significant trait he sought because it was a guiding principle for himself. If Emperor Long hadn't been loyal to the country, Du Liang could have entered seclusion for a century and focused on ascending to immortality. He gave up the chance only due to his love for the empire and its citizens. Thus, Emperor Long couldn't stomach passing his baton to a disloyal person.

The listener sighed because he couldn't refute this logic. Someone willing to harm kin won't distinguish between father and brother. Thus, Fu Chen pitied Du Fang for his rash action.

"Get a copy of the bounty from the Black Guild and spread it around the empire. Then, use gossipers to tell everyone that Du Fang is the client ordering this hit," the emperor instructed.

"Hai!" Head eunuch bowed and executed the imperial command. By pointing the finger at the first prince with concrete evidence of his misdeed, Du Fang will lose face and never rehabilitate his reputation. Moreover, the nobles will drop their support because they fear being the next sacrificial lambs in Du Fang's thirst for power.
